BASE: A Framework for Logistics and Operations
Ways to Organize the Things You Don't Think About
We’re finally at our final framework. We’ve talked about Offense (SCORE), Defense (STOP), Culture (DNA), and now we’re on to Logistics and Organization (BASE).
These are frameworks we’re going to come back to in the future…with the goal of helping you fine-tune your program/team, focus your coaching and leadership, and keep getting better at what you do as a coach.
So, let’s talk about BASE. We’ll just cover the basics today to get your mind thinking about these things, but will dive into each category in more depth soon.
BASE stands for…
B = Build the Player (Skill Development)
A = Administer the Program
S = Staff the Program
E = Expand the Program
NOTE: We’ll dive into this more on HC3 on Skool. Give it a look!
B → Build the Player
This is your plan to help your players grow skill-wise, physically, mentally, and emotionally over your time leading them.
This covers things like your drills for skill development, your strength and conditioning program, the way you build leadership and habits, what your off-season looks like (team camps, summer camps, workout schedule, etc.), and long-term development for your players and team.
The better players you have, the more winning you’ll experience (obviously). It’s on you to maximize how “good” your players become and you need to be intentional about it.
A → Administer the Program
How do you run your program on a daily basis? How do you communicate with your players, parents, coaches, and administration? What does practice look like? What are your routines? How do you organize? Who is responsible for what?
This is the actual RUNNING of your program and team.
Yes, you’re a coach. But this is the part of the job that isn’t Xs and Os or game scheming. These are your daily operations and who is in charge of them.
S → Staff the Program
Speaking of “who is in charge”, this section focuses on building a staff and aligning them on what your vision is.
If you coach at a high school, chances are (unless you’re very fortunate)…you probably don’t have a lot of options as to who is helping your team out on a year-to-year basis. And even then, having someone around consistently during the season and back for multiple seasons in a row is difficult.
This is an even more important reason to have a solid system in place.
Who are your assistants? What do they do? What about your feeder program? How do you get them aligned? What do you want them aligned on?
This section is all about the PEOPLE in your program.
E → Expand the Program
And finally, we move to expansion.
Every year, you should be striving to be better and more advanced and more focused in how you do things. Your program should be rising in some capacity each year.
This is the structure of your feeder system - teams, development, workouts, coaching staffs, tournaments, middle school, and so on.
You should know who is coming up your pipeline. You should be pouring into those kids.
If you’re only focusing on the varsity team or the 17-U team…it’s going to be tough from year to year.
That’s BASE. It’s a simple framework, but it covers a lot of areas coaches sometimes neglect or don’t spend as much time and energy on.
To build a complete program that has a sustainable culture and grows each season…you have to have an intentional plan. It doesn’t just happen.
There’s alignment, systems, plans in place, good people, development on purpose, and so much more.
Chew on these ideas for a little bit…we’ll be coming back to them later.
