Coaches - I know we all start at different times in the year, so I wanted to push this out as a resource as you start to prep for your upcoming season.
Before I share those, I wanted to offer you a few questions to ask yourself before this season starts:
How am I going to “protect the asset” this season? YOU are the asset. If you can’t give your best self, your team will suffer. What are you going to do to make sure you are mentally, emotionally, and physically in the best possible space to lead your team?
What can I actually control this season? Be honest and realistic here. What do you TRULY have the ability to impact this season? Focus on that.
How do I want my players to feel as a result of playing for me? When practice is over, when the season concludes, when your players no longer play for you…how do you want them to feel? Intentionally do things to make that happen.
What will be a tangible marker of progress this season in our team/program? Is it wins? Conference finish? Team GPA?
How can I delegate tasks (if applicable) to my staff? Maybe you can put somebody in charge of travel checks. Maybe you can hand the defense or BLOBs to an assistant. Maybe you can delegate interaction with the youth feeder program to another coach. Whatever you need to do to make sure that more of your time is spent COACHING and LEADING…do that.
How do I want to begin and end practice this season? Do you want to have a team talk? A breakdown huddle? Thought of the day? Jump right in? How do you want to wrap things up every day? Routines and systems here could be beneficial for your program.
What ONE thing do I want to hold my team most accountable for this season on the offensive end?
What ONE thing do I want to hold my team most accountable for this season on the defensive end?
What ONE thing do I want to hold my team most accountable for this season when it comes to our culture?
What is ONE thing I want to hold myself most accountable for this season?
