Youngstown State Style of Play (22-23)
A look at how the Penguins played so efficiently last season
Before we dive in, check out the Gumroad store for the latest product - a package of different forms and templates to help your program/make life a little easier on you as a coach.
There’s everything from practice plan templates to analytical stat sheets to late game strategy charts to a weekly planner. Check it out (and it would have been free if you were a HC Extra subscriber).
Youngstown State finished 5th nationally in raw overall offensive efficiency last season.
The Penguins had one of the most efficient offenses in college hoops last year so I decided to take whatever film I could find and take a closer look.
Here’s a video that breaks down some of their actions/concepts:
And here are a few diagrams of sets they ran last season:
Here are some things I noticed:
they sometimes would legitimately have 5 guys on the floor who could shoot it from outside
they ran sets with purpose (and based on scout/specific time of game/score)
they ran plenty of sets, but they also gave their players a lot of freedom within those sets
they weren’t afraid to push - and keep the ball - in transition as the play developed
Hopefully you got something from this super quick look into Youngstown State - whether it was an idea/concept to implement into your style of play, a set play to add, or a video clip to share with your players.
Until next time!
